Sonn Ngai is an interdisciplinary multimedia artist from St Thomas, Jamaica. He is a 2019 graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing arts and holds a BFA in painting. Through his work he hopes to explore and challenge representations of blackness-specifically Caribbean blackness- both as a sort of sociological duty as well as out of a sense of seeking personal understanding.
Ngai’s work gives form to surreal dream parodies of the lived experiences of Caribbean people; past, present (and future). These new narratives seek to engage us with a black mirror of our own culture in the hopes of understanding it better and embracing it with minds free of colonially imposed biases.
